What Do We Want Our Schools To Be?

RNESU Response to Act 46: School Governance Consolidation

With the passage of Act 46 (H 361), supervisory unions and districts are mandated to study how they may be more efficient, equitable and sustainable through merging and forming fewer districts or Supervisory Unions statewide. RNESU presented on this law to our 11 boards on June 17, 2015 and asked each board to enter a study committee to determine what we want for our students. As the home of the Brigham Decision, we take equity and equitable opportunity to heart. We have already centralized services such as transportation, food services, special education, curriculum and finance. What we now need to grapple with is our declining enrollment and how we serve 8 communities with a combination of small schools and medium schools. Watch this site to track our progress and watch for opportunities to join the conversation.

The committee is charged with studying the benefits and challenges of forming a union district comprising the towns of Brandon, Chittenden, Goshen, Leicester, Mendon, Pittsford, Sudbury, and Whiting, engaging the public community in this study, determine whether formation of a union district should be taken to the voters for approval, and completing a written report for the Vermont State Board of Education.
